Leoben Connoy by IgnusDei Leoben Connoy by IgnusDei
or: There ain't no Sheep in here.

part of an exercise to reimagine the reimagined series of Battlestar Galactica, on the Relicnews Forums. I picked on Leoben Connoy, a cylon replicant and clearly one of the most compelling characters of season 1...before they vented him to space.

Fantastically creepy. It's almost like a mythological representation.

This is pretty cool; although it's certainly much more fanatical than the original Leoben.

Pretty awesome pic. The whole "shooting himself in the head" thing reminds me of Persona 3.

Oh this is fantastic. I love it!
As a fan of the re-imagined BSG, I have to say that this is fantastic! It's an interesting twist on the way the producers decided to portray the Cylons in the series, and I have to say your version is quite unique.

I always thought that in the show, the Cylons should have only looked human on the outside, and had mechanical parts inside. I can see why they wanted to make them identical, it messes with the ethics of the situation, but I think they took the "Skinjobs" a little too far from their machine origins. Maybe that's just me, but I certainly like this rendition.

it's a compelling piece with regards to subject matter/composition/action taking place, but i wish the hands and arms were given as much detail as his face. also, is his right arm blue in an attempt to signify his cylon nature... if that is the case i think it would be more compelling it it were more clearly identifiable as a machine arm.

one last note is about the beard and the smile and what they're saying about this character. it makes him look a little crazy like a scary homeless bum... and although Leoben seemed crazy in the beginning, one realized that he was merely a very determined character driven by his iron faith. he was fearless because of his convictions, and therefore intense. he exuded a quiet menace brought about by his unshakable faith and intuitive understanding of how people worked. i don't know if i see that in this image (which is powerful in it's own right) so much as i see a scary looking bearded guy blowing his brains out.

what inspired you to go with this direction?

p.s. the blue/gray color choices are somber and mechanical, fitting... and i like the "pop" that the red brings to the image. have you ever thought of eliminating the tie and putting more red coming out of the "wound"? this could not only signify blood (which the cylons have), but also to pay homage to all the red blinking lights within their ships. you would therefore be paying service to their human tendencies while acknowledging their machine cores.

that's all i got for ya. thanks for your time.

what inspired me to go in this, well, i guess the root of it all would be Persona 3, an rpg that features teenagers using gun-like devices to summon "Personas", a representation of their inner selves made substiantial by some negative space wedgie. The summoning itself was pretty shocking: they had to "shoot" themselves in the head to blow the personas out of their skulls. The idea stuck in my head, and when it came to re-imagine a cylon, i initially thought i'd do this with leoben by giving a Persona of his own. But then i thought "why not push the idea even further and have fun with it?" One thing led to another, including making him look like Joaquim Phoenix post-breakdown. :D And so, just like the re-imagined characters have little to do with their original counterparts save for maybe their jobs, this Leoben has little to do with the first: This one's faith, rather than making him a quietly intense man, has turned him into a crazed fanatic. This whole image is a look at his psyche, not his actions.

sounds good. it makes more sense to me now.

i remember when persona came out, it looked interesting, but i never was one to dovote much time to RPGs... the only real RPG i ever finished was Parasite Eve, and even that one wasn't traditional from the standpoint that you could run around while waiting for your turn.

i think Joaquim is faking it for his new documentary movie. It's all an elaborate ruse. seriously.

and if i am wrong about Joaquin Phoenix... i am entertained nonetheless, lol.
